Empowering Women in STEM: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Charity Kpabep Scholarship Programme

In the fast-paced world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the contributions of women have often been sidelined or underestimated. However, in Nigeria, a groundbreaking initiative is changing the narrative and paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future in STEM fields. The Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme, implemented by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), is empowering female engineers and technicians, propelling them towards excellence and leadership roles in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) manufacturing sector.

On the 20th of March 2024, a remarkable event unfolded as 32 beneficiaries of the Charity Kpabep Scholarship gathered for an award ceremony that marked a significant milestone in their academic and professional journeys. The ceremony, held with grandeur and grace, served as a celebration of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

The event was moderated by Mr Oluyomi Banjo, the National Programme Coordinator – Environment and Energy, UNIDO. The proceedings began with a heartfelt welcome speech from Prof. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, the Chair of the UNIDO Charity Kpabep Scholarship Programme Working Group and Senior Adviser for the Society of Women Engineers Africa Advisory Board, a beacon of inspiration and one of the driving forces behind the scholarship programme. She acknowledged the role of Christy Obasi who acted as the secretariat for the Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme and Deborah Braide who had supported with facilitation. Her words resonated with warmth and sincerity, setting the tone for an event filled with hope and promise.

Following the welcome address, Dr. Osuji Otu, representing the UNIDO Regional Office, took the stage to introduce the Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme for female engineers and technicians in Nigeria. In his statement, he said that the scholarship component forms part of the activities proposed for Nigeria’s hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) Stage III Project. The HPMP Stage III Project targets to phase out 17.13 Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) tonnes of HCFC-22 to a low Global Warming Potential technology- R-32, as well as assist Nigeria in meeting the target of 67.5 per cent reduction in HCFC baseline consumption by 2025. He went ahead to underscore the importance of gender inclusivity in STEM education and employment. His opening speech highlighted the broader significance of initiatives like the Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme in advancing sustainable development goals and fostering a more equitable society.

The keynote address by Patience Ekeoba, the UN Women representative in Nigeria, was a powerful testament to the urgent need for gender mainstreaming in STEM fields. She spoke passionately about the role of women as agents of change and urged the scholarship beneficiaries to seize every opportunity to challenge stereotypes and break barriers.

Dr. Ina Colombo-Youla, a distinguished figure in the STEM community, delivered an inspiring motivational talk that resonated deeply with the audience. She introduced the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) and the International Network of Women in Cooling (INWIC) to the participants, encouraging the beneficiaries to identify themselves and make an impact.

The highlight of the ceremony was undoubtedly the presentation of scholarship awards to the 32 deserving beneficiaries by Engr. Idris Abdullahi, the National Ozone Officer and Engr. Vera Egwatu, Chair SWE Africa Advisory Board, symbolizing a tangible commitment to supporting women’s advancement in STEM fields. The moment was filled with pride and excitement as each beneficiary received recognition for their hard work and dedication.

As the event drew to a close, Ms. Kaleneberi Kpabep, speaking on behalf of her fellow beneficiaries, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the organizers, sponsors, and supporters of the scholarship programme. Her words were a poignant reminder of the transformative impact of education and opportunity.

In his closing remark, Mr. Fukuya Lino, the Industrial Development Officer at UNIDO, reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality and sustainable development. He applauded the efforts of all stakeholders involved in the Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme and expressed optimism for the future of women in STEM in Nigeria.

The Charity Kpabep Scholarship Award Ceremony was not just a momentous occasion; it was a celebration of hope, empowerment, and possibility. It served as a testament to the resilience and determination of women in overcoming barriers and achieving greatness in STEM fields. As we look towards the future, let us continue to support initiatives like the Charity Kpabep Scholarship programme, ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to pursue her dreams and make her mark on the world. Together, we can build a future where gender equality is not just a goal but a reality in STEM fields across the globe.
