From Africa to the World

On May 28, 2025, a bold vision was set in motion as the African Technology and Innovation Institute (ATII), in collaboration with the University of Lagos’ Innovation and Technology Management Office (ITMO) and the Sabi Africa Network, launched the first edition of the “From Africa to the World Innovation Series.”

This transformative initiative aims to amplify Africa’s contributions to global innovation by spotlighting indigenous knowledge systems and how they intersect with modern science to create sustainable, impactful solutions for the future.

A Powerful Theme for a Promising Beginning

The inaugural session, titled “Sustainable Innovations: Harnessing Indigenous African Science for Sustainable Innovations of the Future,” brought together innovators, researchers, and thought leaders from across the continent and the diaspora to reflect on Africa’s unique approach to solving modern challenges. The conversation centered on the importance of leveraging traditional African knowledge in science, engineering, and technology to drive sustainable development that is both culturally grounded and environmentally conscious.

ATII’s Founder Sets the Tone

Delivering the keynote address was none other than Professor Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, Founder of both ATII and Sabi Africa Network, and one of Silicon Valley’s Top 100 Most Influential People. With her unique lens as a leading African voice in global innovation, Professor Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua offered deep insights on how African ingenuity, rooted in indigenous science can be scaled to offer real-world solutions on a global stage.

Her keynote emphasized that sustainability is not just a trend but a tradition deeply embedded in African culture, from water conservation methods in arid regions to organic farming practices that have preserved ecosystems for generations.

“It’s time we stop treating Africa as a continent to be helped, and instead recognize it as a wellspring of innovative solutions the world desperately needs.” — Professor Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua

A Convergence of Purpose

The event was not just about ideas, it was about building a future where African knowledge is not peripheral, but central. ITMO continues to play a vital role by supporting and protecting innovative research within UNILAG, ensuring that ideas born within academic walls find real-world application and impact.

Meanwhile, ATII remains committed to facilitating research, knowledge transfer, and innovation tailored to Africa’s needs, and Sabi Africa Network continues to tell the powerful stories of African scientific and technological excellence.

Looking Ahead

This is only the beginning. The “From Africa to the World” Innovation Series will serve as a recurring platform for learning, collaboration, and action ensuring that Africa’s voice is not just heard, but felt in the global innovation dialogue.

To everyone who attended the event, thank you for being part of this historic moment. For those who missed it, the future editions promise even more groundbreaking conversations and collaborations.

Together, we’re reimagining innovation. Together, we’re building a future powered by African ingenuity.
